Barcelona supporters and all those that love Leo Messi have to be worried about the news that is breaking in Spain right now.
The Spanish Supreme Court have confirmed Leo Messi’s 21-month prison sentence.
The Criminal Chamber of the Supreme Court confirmed on Wednesday the sentence of 21 months in prison for the Barcelona superstar.
15 months in jail for Messi’s father
This sentence was handed out to Lionel Messi after he was sentenced by a Barcelona Court for three crimes against the Public Treasury.
Nevertheless, Messi’s sentence has been reduced to 15 months in jail and the sentence imposed on the Barca striker’s father, legal sources have informed El Confidencial.
Messi has already returned the amount defrauded before the trial. And admitted that himself and his father had avoided the payment of taxes derived from the exploitation of the Argentine attacker’s image rights.
7 months in prison for each of the 3 crimes
Messi was sentenced to seven months in prison for each of the three crimes, plus a fine of 532,313.31 euros for the fraud committed in 2007.
The Barcelona attacker has defended himself all along by saying that he had no idea about the complex business manouver to avoid taxes on his image rights.
Leo Messi’s father, Jorge, requested a year and a half in prison, if convicted.
Neither Messi or his father are likely to spend time in jail as under Spanish law sentences under two years can be served under probation.

Did Leo Messi know about the tax avoidance?

During the Spanish State Attorney gave “zero credibility” to the claim that Leo Messi had no idea about the tax avoidance on his image rights.
The court argued in its ruling that Messi’s ignorance due “indifference” cannot cause him to be exempted of responsibility.
Meanwhile, the Spanish press are reporting today that Jorge Messi is currently on his way to Barcelona to close Leo Messi’s new contract at the Camp Nou.
