Members of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) at Dormaa Central in the Brong Ahafo Region have reportedly asked the gods of their ancestors to strike down any Ivorian who crosses the border to take part in the ongoing limited voter registration exercise. This follows allegations that the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) is transporting Ivorian nationals through the border town of Badukrom to register ahead of the Novembers polls, a report by atinkaonline said on Friday. Constituency executives in the area are said to have petitioned the gods on Wednesday, calling on them to deal with any non-Ghanaian who crosses the border to register. They specifically called the gods of Kumor river, which serves as a boundary between the two countries, to kill or drown any Ivorian who crosses the border to register, the report said. It called on the government to put in place a dual petroleum pricing policy to allow waiver on taxes when world market prices increase. It urged the government to ensure some stability in prices using tax cuts in order to “forestall the tendency to wipe out all the gains and positives of the price deregulation programme altogether.” “World markets have seen an adjustment of some $6/barrel moving from below $40/barrel over the last window to above $46/barrel as of trading today the 28th of April.” It also asked all flagbearers “to as a matter of policy state their petroleum management po

Ex-MP jailed for 154years over corruption

Image
A court in Nigeria has sentenced a former local MP to 154 years in jail for corruption and money laundering. Gabriel Daudu, from central Kogi State, was found guilty of 77 charges, Nigeria’s anti-corruption body says. But the judge ruled that the sentences would run concurrently, meaning Dauda will only spend two years in jail. Corruption is endemic in Nigeria and so far the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has only managed to secure a handful of convictions. President Muhammadu Buhari won elections last year, promising to tackle the problem. A number of prominent officials from the previous government have been arrested and put on trial, but some accuse the president of only targeting the opposition. The EFCC says Mr Daudu, who was put on trial in 2010, was involved in laundering about $7m (£5m). Delivering the judgement in Kogi state capital, Lokoja, Justice Inyang Ekwo said the persecution had “proved its case beyond every reasonable doubt”, the EFCC said in a

The damaging effects of skin bleaching

Image
Some years back, bleaching was practised mainly by women, but in recent times men have also joined the race. It has become the vogue among the youth. It is not uncommon to see many Ghanaian women and some men who have lost their natural skin colour due to deformities such as burnt skin, wrinkles, skin blemishes and red spots on the skin bleaching. Many African women bleach because of low self-esteem and cultural influence precipitated by colonial mentality of beauty as determined by some Europeans. Through their incessant racial abuse, these Europeans persuaded Africans to believe that their black skin is inferior. Besides the fact that bleaching is an endorsement of mental slavery, most bleaching products and creams contain toxic chemical ingredients, including hydroquinone, glutathione and mercury. Hydroquinone prevents the skin from forming the substance responsible for skin color. What is behind the color complex? In my opinion, variety is the spice of life, such as variety in
